Let's get to know The Juan

The World’s Greatest, Most Famous Mexican Detective

His name is Juan Guillermo Meza Peso Magellan Jaime Rodriguez de Lopez. 

The legends of detectivery (his business) simply call him The Juan. When The Juan steps into a room full of detectives, they all stand and watch as he walks past. 

This doesn’t happen very often... in fact it has never happened, since detectives don’t gather in groups -- but if they did, that is what would happen!

His office is in the fashionable side of the predominantly Mexican city of Pau d'Arco, Australia. Being exposed to the Australian accent, Juan has lost his own and sounds more like someone from South Texas. Well, at times there is a touch of Bostonian. . .

(This is a totally fictional character and humorous story)

Probably everyone has heard this song. First time I heard it, James Taylor was the singer, but it’s been done by many... it’s just one of those songs. Written by one of the great songwriters, Carole King.

We just have to remember -- to have a true friend, you have to be a true friend.

One of my favorite versions of this song is this one on YouTube with Carole King, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, and Shania Twain. (I had the video here on the post, but it was slowing down the page load, so I took that off, added the YouTube link, and grabbed this image from the web instead :-)

Introducing . . .

In the world of detectives, some are very famous -- if someone comes to mind right away, that’s who I’m talking about... if you have to think about it a little, those are the not quite so famous ones. And then, there are those who are known by their peers as being above the rest -- it is with this kind of detective in mind that we introduce:

The World’s Most Famous Mexican Detective

If you have never heard of him, it is because he is that good. You see, detectives are supposed to detect, not be detected. So in a way, the more well-known they are, the less effective they have been.

His exploits, as his undertakings are related herein, are those recounted from his time in Australia. How he came to be in the land of the Aussie will be told some day. But for now, it is enough for you to know that those who wish to follow the Cases of The Greatest Mexican Detective have come to the right place. Please stay tuned.

Kids Don’t Learn Through Osmosis

Some parents must think their children should just have certain knowledge as a consequence of being their offspring... or simply just because they should. For example, I was the youngest son of my dad, who was a carpenter. One day when I was not quite ten years old, I was helping him with a project -- none of my brothers were around, so it was either me, or no way he could do it. Well, I was holding one end of a long board and suddenly Dad said to “hold it flush” … does your little kid know what that means??

The only time I had ever heard the word ‘flush’ was in the bathroom! Or when either Dean Martin or Bret Maverick was playing poker in the movies. My lack of knowledge of carpenter’s jargon was a constant source of grief to him; I just did not get that through sharing his genes. Osmosis.

Another example of parents supposing children should know something without being taught comes to mind. A girl I knew in my early teens was asked by her mother to make some scrambled eggs one morning. She did ask her mom how, and her mother simply directed her to crack the eggs into a large bowl and stir them up with a whisk. Then her mom left the room. Several minutes later, she returned to find her daughter still stirring away at the eggs in the bowl. She asked her mom exasperatedly, “How long does it take before the eggs are done??” Osmosis.

Parents, of course, are not totally to blame for this. Think of all the times adults will say something with a child present, thinking their kid will have no idea what is being discussed, only to be embarrassed when Little Ears brings up the subject at the most inopportune time!

I can imagine my dad saying at such a moment, “Why didn’t you pick up carpenter talk like that?”

Suggested Book: Breasts, A Natural and Unnatural History

New book worth mentioning:
Breasts: A Natural and Unnatural History by Florence Williams

I haven't read this book, was just reading about it and sounds worth looking into. Of course, there's always something you might not agree with, and for me it's the evolution part. But skipping past that, it seems to have a lot of info we may not know.

A couple of Amazon reviewers tell us:
Viewer D_shrink (5 stars): "The author discusses a very serious subject, in that most of book is devoted to breast cancer and its primary cause according to her which is carcinogens in the environment. Yet she approaches her subject in a humorous manner from the first page..."

Favorite songs: Forever and For Always

Since I put up the first "favorite songs" post a few days ago, I just had to do one of my favorite songs. Marry Me is one Noe likes, and after I heard and loved it too, I thought how nice it would be to post the lyrics to a song encouraging marriage. So we started a "favorite songs" section that we'll be adding to from time to time.

I have loved this one, Forever and For Always by Shania Twain, ever since I first heard it too. I must say, it is really sad that she and her husband were not able to stay together forever and always, due to his infidelity... kinda makes the song hard to listen to, when you think of how sad it must make her to hear it. Or, I should say, I suppose it would, since they wrote it together when they were a couple, but maybe now she thinks of it for her new husband -- I hope she can still sing it with him in mind, because it's such a beautiful song ... and may their marriage last 'till death do them part.'

There was a crooked house...

I saw a Google+ post about this very interesting crooked house, which is part of a shopping center in Poland. It reminded me of the old rhyme we used to sing when we were kids, and here's how I remember it:
